A Police spokesperson said the 36-year-old driver was attacked by one of three youths he picked up along North Shore Road.

The driver told officers that the three youths, between the ages of 18-20, flagged him down just after 10 p.m.

They asked to be taken to Shelly Bay Beach, requesting that he stop on the Old Road side.

The youths left the taxi and as they were paying the fare, one sprayed the driver in the face with what was believed to be acid and attempted to snatch his money.

The spokesperson said the driver stepped down on the gas pedal and drove to North Shore Road where he flagged down a passing car.

Officers attended the scene after receiving an emergency call from Radio Cabs.

They found the man being assisted by several persons.

An ambulance was called and the man was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he received treatment for burns he suffered to the side of his face.
