Young and his son Kyle stunned.

Kyle Young was working on the vehicle on the lawn of his home on Devonshire Bay Road when the first sign of fire appeared around 6.30 p.m.

He was under the dashboard of the 13-year-old car when he heard sparks.

"I heard a tsch, tsch sound and so I left and got a hose right away,'' he said. "It was only a few seconds. I saw a really small flame and then it was in full blaze. It happened so fast.

"I had the hose and was pouring water on it from one side until the fire department arrived.'' Bermuda Fire Service Sgt. Roger Dill said it took about ten minutes to extinguish the blaze and said the spark Mr. Young heard ignited and grew when it found fuel in the car's gas tank.

"I was upstairs watching TV when all this happened,'' Roddy Young said. "I knew my son was down here taking out bits and pieces and I had thought he lit a bonfire.

"It was going to the dump tomorrow.''
