Sandy's resident George Mouchette is on trial in Supreme Court today, charged with importation and possession of a controlled drug. Mouchette, whose trial was originally set down for Monday morning, will not be tried today for aiding and abetting in the supply of diamorphine, as reported in Tuesday's paper.

Mouchette was in fact charged with aiding and abetting in the supply of diamorphine in June and a long form preliminary inquiry on those charges is scheduled.

Operation Cleansweep defendant George Mouchette had his day in court delayed until tomorrow by Chief Justice Austin Ward to enable him to consult with his lawyer.

The 40-year-old Sandys Parish resident asked for a delay because his counsel Archie Warner was not available. Mr. Warner was appearing in another trial -- apparently caught out when the Mouchette trial was brought forward by a number of weeks.

Mouchette faces charges of aiding and abetting in the supply of diamorphine in Broome Street.

He was charged in Magistrates' Court in early June along with 14 other alleged drug dealers arrested en masse during Operation Cleansweep, a large scale Police operation involving undercover officers and secret video tapes of alleged drug deals.

Yesterday the Chief Justice said he would do everything possible to clear up the backlog of cases facing the Court.

"I intend to have ten trials this month, one will follow the other no matter what,'' he told Mouchette.

"I understand you expected this case to be tried in October and were surprised that it was set down for today.

"You would like a few days to get things together with your lawyer but by asking for adjournments you are wasting time.''
