Corporation warns of parade litter problem
have led to extra refuse bins being placed along this year's route.
Corporation of Hamilton secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt said the problem had become a growing one.
"An enormous amount of trash is left on the streets of Hamilton after the Heritage Day parade and every year it's getting worse,'' he said. "They sit around and throw trash away whether it be drink or food containers, food, bags or plastic. Front Street is particularly bad but it applies to the entire parade route.
"Our biggest problem is immediately after the parade ends. Traffic starts up and it becomes impossible to clean the streets. We have to wait until the next morning and if it's windy, the trash goes all over the place.
"We're putting out extra containers and we'd like to encourage people to use them. We'd like to suggest to anybody taking picnics to take along trash bags and put their trash in the bags. If they can't take the bags home, we'd ask them to leave them next to the bins. It will be of great assistance to everybody.''
