The awards were made last year by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.

The highest award -- $70,000 -- went to the mother of slain Reginald Chesterfield Wilson.

Wilson's hacked and beaten body was dumped in the ocean off North Shore in February, 1994. Three men were later arrested over his death.

Wayne Damion Smith, an unemployed father of four, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

His co-accused, 24-year-old Sean Charles Smith and 19-year-old Jamel Tito Smith, were convicted for their parts in the killing, receiving prison terms of seven and a half years and two years respectively.

In its report, the Compensation Board stated one of Wilson's assailants hit him in the back of the head with a baseball bat, while another began to chop him with a machete.

The Board -- whose report was tabled in the House of Assembly yesterday -- handed out the maximum award it is entitled to make.

The second highest award -- $40,000 -- went to the brother of Clarence E.

Smith, who was stabbed to death in February 1994.

Ronae Caillon Burgess was sentenced to life in prison after a Supreme Court jury found the 20-year-old man guilty of Smith's murder.

The Supreme Court heard Smith died on the operating table at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after two, three-inch deep stabs wounds lacerated his liver, pancreas and colon.

The stabbing outside the Southampton Rangers Sports Club followed an argument between Burgess and the victim's brother, Glenn (Bird's Nest) Smith over a bag of pawpaws.

Other awards by the Board -- which is chaired by Mrs. Justice Norma Wade -- included: $37,200 for Michael David Robson, who had a four-inch blade plunged into his head, piercing his brain, during a fracas at the Ice Queen restaurant in Paget.

Randy Eric Benjamin, 27, was jailed for four years after being found guilty of unlawful wounding by a jury at the Supreme Court.

Following the attack, Robson spent three and a half months in a rehabilitation centre in Canada.

He is unable to speak properly and has suffered frequent seizures. His right side is partially paralysed.

In its report the Board stated the prognosis for a full recovery was zero.

It added the award was halved because of Robson's "provocation of the incident''.

$30,054.30 for a 38-year-old mother-of-two assaulted while sunbathing in a secluded area of a small beach in September, 1994.

She was lying on her stomach reading when a St. Brendan's patient pounced on her and tried to have sex.

The victim suffered neck injuries, bruising to her body and face and nervous shock; $25,334.82 for Policeman John Fryer assaulted in Court Street by some 12 men when he was pelted and stoned with bottles and kicked about the face and body.

Crime victims receive awards Kimani Llewelyn Fubler and Ian Jason Simmons were jailed for two years after they pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and serious assault.

Two other men involved in the attack, Gilroy Guy Brangman, of Northcote Avenue, Pembroke, and Malik Donahue Outerbridge, of Loyal Hill Road, Devonshire, each received suspended sentences at an earlier Magistrates's Court hearing.

As a result of the attack Fryer was left physically and emotionally shaken and has sought psychiatric treatment.

$15,000 for the mother of Wilfred Sharand Ming, who was slain in September 1994.

Winston Wellington Burgess was put behind bars for seven years for manslaughter.

Burgess was involved in a fight with Ming at the Canterbury Bar and Grill in St. George's on September 10, 1994 after they became embroiled in an argument that involved name calling and anti-gay slurs.

During the fight Burgess pulled a knife from a pouch on his waist. Ming received two cuts to the chest; $16,000 to a 14-year-old girl assaulted and raped on railway tracks on May 9, 1993; $7,778 to Ian Nigel McKenzie, an employee at the White Sands Hotel who was attacked with a metal bar by three people on March 21, 1994; $15,000 to Renee B.J. Kelly, a 17-year-old attacked while sitting with her boyfriend on a park bench. The offender, a 14-year-old in foster care, bit off part of her ear; $13,586.86 to Gail Patricia Marshall attacked at work by an knife-wielding assailant who robbed a cash register in April 1994. She suffered a knife-wound to her right forearm; and $10,790 to a 15-year-old girl sexually assaulted after being dragged off the footpath while walking along the beach trails on South Shore Road in August 1993. She has received counselling since the attack.

The Board rejected a claim by a prisoner who said he was injured in Casemates on November 13, 1993.

It said it was not authorised to make an award to Manuel Bento because the incident had not been reported to Police, although it was reported to prison authorities.

The total of the awards came to $496,217.18.
