Dangerous driver scolded by magistrate for `bad attitude'

Committing a slew of traffic and other offences, including falling asleep while driving, yesterday cost a 39-year-old Devonshire man close to $1,000 in fines.

Stephen (Perinchief) Trott, of Aerial View Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving without due care and attention, riding in a dangerous manner, riding an uninsured vehicle without a licence, using offensive words, and obstructing Police.

Prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy said the first offence came to light when Trott was involved in a single-vehicle accident at the junction of Barkers Hill and Jubilee Road.

Trott was travelling south on Barkers Hill around 5 a.m. on August 11 when he fell asleep at the wheel of his car and collided with a coral wall at the bottom of the hill, Insp. Duffy said.

Trott suffered a sprained wrist and bruised ankle and knees.

"The car was a write off,'' Insp. Duffy said.

Four days later, Police approached Trott around 6 p.m. on Angle Street with an outstanding arrest warrant.

Insp. Duffy said Trott sped off on his cycle in a northerly direction on Court Street, then turned left on Angle Street, causing oncoming vehicles to take defensive action.

The court heard that Trott led Police on a wild chase through the back streets of Hamilton before he was caught.

When stopped he also cursed Police, telling them to leave him alone and go arrest some white people, Insp. Duffy said.

After hearing Insp. Duffy's statements, Trott said he should have pleaded not guilty.

But he said he wanted to get the matter over with.

Magistrate the Wor. John Judge told him he could not ignore his comments and accept a guilty plea.

Trott, who is due to leave the Island for medical reasons, insisted that he wanted to dispose of all the offences yesterday.

"I'm trying to get all these troubles out of my life because I don't want to come back here,'' he said, clearly agitated.

Mr. Judge scolded Trott about his "bad attitude''.

"You're obviously in need of counselling. You have a prejudice toward anybody,'' he told Trott.

"You have an awful lot of baggage inside your head and you will be very well advised to go and get counselling.

"You're going to live a very unhappy life with all that tripe inside your head. The people who suffer worst from prejudice are people who are prejudice themselves.'' Mr. Judge fined Trott $100 for driving without due care because he said: "you came out the worst out of all this''.

He also fined him $350 for dangerous driving and ordered him off the road for a year.

Trott was also fined $300 for riding with no third party insurance, $125 for riding an unlicensed cycle, and $100 for offensive words.

And he was ordered to pay $250 for obstructing Police during a drug search on June 22 at Elliott Street.

After hearing that Trott had a previous conviction, dating back to March 2, 1990, Mr. Judge said: "It's perfectly obvious what your problem is.''
