Drivers `lucky to be alive': `With this spectacular accident, we are lucky there were no casualties'

Two men involved in single-vehicle accidents were warned by Senior Magistrate Will Francis that their actions could have led to death.

Myron Wade Riley, of 4 Foothills Road, Devonshire, yesterday admitted to driving while impaired.

He was found by Police officers standing opposite his crashed car on the North Shore Road in Devonshire at 10.30 p.m. on April 16.

Forty-three year old Riley, had collided with the wooden railing on the eastbound carriageway.

Mr. Francis pointed out the danger, telling Riley: "Driving in that state, you could have found yourself going somewhere you really didn't want to go.

"We could have been here for your inquest.'' Riley was fined $500 and banned from driving all motor vehicles for a year.

In another incident, 27-year-old Michael Fubler, of 12 Constance Crescent, Warwick will have to pay $2,300 in fines for driving offences.

The offences stemmed from an accident around 8.30 p.m. on October 16 near Spice Valley Middle School on Middle Road in Warwick.

The court heard that Fubler, travelling west in his Mitsubishi Lancer, had veered across the road several times hitting sidewalks on both sides of the road before actually mounting the pavement and colliding with a wooden barrier.

A Police car travelling east had to break suddenly to avoid colliding with Fubler before the crash.

According to Junior Crown counsel Veronica Gordon, officers found Fubler in his car in a semi-conscious state. When they asked him how he was, he said: "Buy me a bag of dope''.

The officers described Fubler as being disoriented and not able to stand up.

He refused to take the alco-analyser test and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment for possible injuries.

Fubler yesterday admitted to driving while impaired, driving an unlicensed car, driving an uninsured car, and driving without a valid driver's licence.

His fines -- $500, $900, $700 and $200 respectively -- totalled $2,300 and are payable by June 4. Fubler was also disqualified from driving all vehicles for a year.

Mr. Francis warned Fubler that he could have caused several deaths: "With this spectacular accident you had we are lucky there were no casualties.'' Lucky: Will Francis ACCIDENT AC
