prison after he admitted committing a slew of drug offences.

Jack Wayne Henderson, of Glebe Road, Pembroke, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to separate drug-related offences on March 16 and October 27.

He admitted possessing 9.5 grams of cannabis and .89 grams of cocaine with intent to supply on March 16, assaulting a Police officer and doing him bodily harm, and obstructing the officer as he carried out his duties under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Henderson, who was unrepresented, also admitted possessing cocaine with intent to supply on October 27, intentionally obstructing a Police officer, violently resisting arrest, assaulting two other officers, and wilfully damaging a rear side door of a Police car.

Insp. Peter Duffy, prosecuting, said narcotics officers were on patrol at the junction of Court and Elliott streets around 10 p.m. on March 16 when they saw Henderson engaged in a transaction with another man.

When Henderson saw Police he began to briskly walk away and ignored Police shouts for him to stop, Insp. Duffy said.

Henderson broke into a run, with Police pursuing him.

After a violent struggle, in which Henderson pushed one of the arresting officer's head to the road and caused swelling, Police managed to get Henderson in the Police car.

Insp. Duffy said $20 was found in Henderson's fist and bulky pay-type envelopes were found on him.

The envelopes contained 9.5 grams of cannabis with a street value of $825 and eight pieces of 88-percent pure free base cocaine worth $400 on the street.

Mixed currency totaling $600 was also found on unemployed Henderson.

At noon on October 27, Police on patrol at Court Street again saw Henderson and another man engaged in a transaction.

Insp. Duffy said Police found $385 tucked in Henderson's right sock during a search.

A further search turned up 8.75 grams of rock cocaine with a 93 percent purity and a street worth of $3,150.

Insp. Duffy said when this was found Henderson pushed the officer conducting the search and ran off.

He was caught by Police and a struggle ensued, with Police eventually handcuffing and arresting Henderson.

"Okay, you guys caught me selling,'' Insp. Duffy said Henderson told Police.

Insp. Duffy said a crowd then gathered and became hostile and Henderson did $90 worth of damage to a rear door of the Police car as Police struggled to arrest him.

Henderson also punched an officer in the face -- causing injuries to his neck, pulled another officer by his tie in attempts to strangle him, and kicked another officer in the groin.

Insp. Duffy said Henderson later admitted to the offences at Hamilton Police Station.

For the March 16 offences, the Wor. John Judge sentenced Henderson -- who had previous drug trafficking and obstruction convictions -- to 18 months for the cocaine charge, six months for cannabis, six months for assaulting an officer and doing bodily harm, and three months for obstruction.

For the October 27 offences, he was sentenced to three years on the cocaine charge, a year for obstruction, six months on each assault charge, a conditional discharge for two years for damaging the Police car, and a conditional discharge for violently resisting arrest.

But Mr. Judge said all sentences except the 18-month prison sentence should be concurrent with the three year prison sentence.

Henderson also admitted stealing $1,385 from Government between July 13, 1991 and January 4 this year by claiming custody benefits.

Henderson later admitted he claimed to be the father of three children.

Mr. Judge imposed a six-month prison term to run concurrent with the time Henderson will already be serving.
