A 38-year-old Warwick man, who dragged his injured wife out of their car after they were involved in an accident, was ordered to pay a $400 fine and spend 21 days in prison.

Warren D. Hall, of Cobbs Hill Road, pleaded guilty, in Magistrates' Court, to impaired driving, failing to report an accident causing injury, using an unlicensed car, and driving without a licence.

Prosecutor Sgt. Kenrick James said Police on patrol on Middle Road, Devonshire, on July 27 noticed a car travelling at a high speed. The car skidded -- creating a 19-inch long skid mark -- and struck another car.

Sgt. James said Hall -- who was driving the car -- got out of the car, dragged his injured wife out of the car and told her to run. But she could not.

Hall was later found by Police who noticed that he was sweating profusely and smelled of alcohol. He was taken to Hamilton Police Station where tests showed that he had 103 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams.

While at the Police station, Hall admitted drinking at his cousin's wedding before driving that day.

Magistrate the Wor. Edward King fined him $400 and took him off the road for a year for impaired driving.

He also ordered Hall to pay $100 for not having a driver's licence, another $100 for using an unlicensed car, and $75 for failing to report the accident.

Because Hall was already in prison for unrelated offences, Mr. King allowed Hall to serve seven days in lieu of payment for each of the three fines.

The 21 days will run concurrently with the time he is already serving.
