sent out for the day yesterday while the defence called witnesses in a bid to have certain evidence admitted.

Despite objections from Ebbin's lawyer Mr. Archie Warner, Puisne Judge the Hon. Mrs. Justice Wade ruled the special voir dire hearing be held in the absence of the jury.

Just before jurors were dismissed, Mrs. Wade had asked Mr. Warner the relevance of his line of questioning striking at Police credibility.

Mr. Warner had been asking Det. Sgt. Alex Arnfield whether he was aware of allegations that former narcotics officer Philip Swift tried to sell information of alleged Police wrongdoings in cases in which he assisted.

Mr. Warner charged on Friday that Swift had made attempts to sell information to those involved in Ebbin's case as well as several other cases he worked on.

He claimed narcotics officers used "bogus'' search warrants in their investigation of his client, three other Bermudians and a Cuban-American.

But Det. Sgt. Arnfield, the chief investigating officer in the case, again insisted that he had not heard of any such allegations.

Mrs. Wade is expected to make a ruling this morning on whether the evidence in question is admissible.

So far jurors have heard a Cuban drug empire's "man in Bermuda'', Antonio Miranda, allegedly distributed some 11 kilos of cocaine to several local dealers, including Ebbin, during a six-month stay in Bermuda. Miranda claims he distributed half that amount to Ebbin.

Ebbin, 35, has denied importing cocaine between May 11 and May 20 of 1990 and conspiring to import the drug between October, 1988 and May 17, 1990 with others not before the court.
