Bermuda was saddened to learn of the passing of Elmore Black, better known as `Turp', a star forward for the Pembroke Juniors Sports Club during their heyday in the 1940s and '50s.

At either right wing or inside right, Elmore was always a keen competitor, and despite his slight stature, he possessed a powerful shot.

Turp was a fast, exciting and skilful player who has thrilled thousands of football fans throughout the Island. He read the game well and always kept a cool head during the heat of battle.

Along with brother Alphaeus, known to all as `Artie', who was a staunch Juniors defender, Turp was instrumental in much of the success achieved by the Juniors in those glory years when they were known as the Kings of the Bermuda Football League.

Elmore was a fine gentleman and a credit to the sport. He was always a good example for both young and old.

Football fans throughout the Island will carry pleasant memories of his great performances for the boys in green and white. It was a treat to see him in action.

On behalf of the members and fans of the former Pembroke Juniors Sports Club, I would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family.
