Dog mauled child, owner fined $250 The owner of a dog that viciously attacked a seven-year-old girl in her front yard was yesterday fined $250.

Michelle Weeks, 28, of Kings Lane South in Warwick, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to owning a dog which caused injury to a person.

Police prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Alicia Benevides was playing in her yard on the evening of July 20 when the black and white Akita viciously attacked her and then ran away.

Alicia was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and required surgery for the wounds on her face, head, and chest, Sgt. Dale said.

At the time of the attack Weeks was out looking for the dog. She later helped with the search and capture of the dog.

After the attack Weeks had the dog, which she had owned for ten years, put to death.

DOG ATTACKED DOG, OWNER FOMED $570 CTS Dog attacked dog, owner fined $570 The owner of a dog that killed another dog was yesterday fined $570 for the offence.

Llewellyn Wainwright, 62, of East Lane in Warwick, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to allowing his dog to stray and to owning a dog which injured another dog.

Magistrate the Wor. Edward King fined him a further $250 for letting the dog stray.

Police prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Wainwright left his dog in the house with the door open while he helped a neighbour clear debris on August 15.

During this time, Wainwright's pit bull terrier left the property and attacked a toy fox terrier, Sgt. Dale said.

The dog received a wound to the chest. And it was later taken to the veterinarian where it died from extensive bleeding.

The $570 was to be paid as compensation to the owners of the other dog.

DOG MOUNTED DOG, OWNER FINE $250 CTS Dog mounted dog, owner fined $250 A Smith's Parish woman was fined $250 after her dog mounted a neighbour's dog.

She was fined a further $200 because her dog was unlicensed.

Betsy Minugh, of Salt House Lane, pleaded guilty to the charges in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Police prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Minugh's neighbour had two female dogs, one in heat, tied up in her yard on March 19.

The neighbour heard her dog crying and when she entered the yard she found Minugh's cross-bred dog breeding with the pit bull.

The neighbour took her dog to the veterinarian to have an abortion shot for some $40, Sgt. Dale said. But complications arose which resulted in a bill of $241.76.

Minugh had her dog licensed and neutered after the incident.

Magistrate the Wor. Edward King fined Minugh $250 for the damage caused to her neighbour's dog and $200 for not having her dog licensed.

MAN FINED $250 FOR POSSESSION OF PIPE CTS Man fined $250 for possession of pipe Possessing a pipe for drug use yesterday cost a 18-year-old Warwick man $250.

Michael Munoz, of Spice Hill Road, pleaded guilty to the charge in Magistrates' Court.

Police prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Munoz was stopped by a Customs officer at the airport on April 29 and searched.

They found two sets of rolling papers in the front compartment of his knapsack, Sgt. Dale said.

A search of the main compartment revealed a small pipe.

Munoz said he used the pipe to smoke marijuana, but did not know it was in his bag.

MAN FINED $340 FOR STEALING HANDBAG CTS Man fined $340 for stealing handbag A 34-year-old St. George's man who stole a handbag containing $840 from a woman in a nightclub was yesterday fined $340.

Richard Dickinson, of Clarence Street, pleaded guilty in Magistrates Court to stealing the hand bag which together with the $840 was worth $1,120.

Police prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said a St. George's woman visited the Moonglow Club in St. George's on the evening of July 21, when her bag was stolen.

The purse was later found, and Dickinson, who said he picked up the bag by mistake, helped Police recover $700 of the stolen money. Dickinson, who had paid back $100, was fined $300 for the offence and ordered to pay $40 as compensation for the balance.

MAN JAILED 21 MONTHS FOR IMPORTATION CTS Man jailed 21 months for importation A 23-year-old Sandys Parish man was yesterday sentenced to 21 months in prison for importing more than 400 grams of cocaine.

Marlon Harvey, of Malabar Close, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to importing cocaine and possessing it with intent to supply.

Police prosecutor Sgt. Rex Osborne said narcotics officers found 429 grams of cocaine in the tyres of a bicycle Harvey tried to bring through Customs on March 18.

Acting Magistrate the Wor. Kim White said: "Drugs are a scourge on our community.

"They are a cancer sapping our society of its young people. Too many people are tempted, as is the case here, by the false prospect of easy money.''
