Man accused of $24,000 theft A Pembroke man has pleaded not guilty to stealing $24,173 from the Collector's Hill Apothecary in Smith's Parish.

At Magistrates' Court yesterday, Steven Adams, 29, also denied receiving the money knowing it was stolen, attempting to pervert the course of justice, and of making two false reports.

Adams, of Twin Lane Drive, Pembroke, will appear again for mention on March 13.

WOMAN BURGLED HOUSE CRM Woman burgled house A 21-year-old Devonshire woman admitted in Magistrates' Court last week to breaking into a private home and stealing $2,000 in cash and property.

Aiesha Ballad, of Happy Dale Road, was one of three who entered a home on Cambridge Road, Sandys Parish on April 6, 1999.

Junior Crown counsel Cindy Clarke said Ballad admitted to Police that she and her two accomplices shared the $1,000 in cash between them.

The thieves also stole a Sharp CD player worth $600 and $400 worth of food items from the home. Police recovered the CD player.

Ballad will be sentenced in early April after a social inquiry.

DRUG ADDICT FINED CTS Drug addict fined A confessed drug addict escaped a prison sentence after turning himself in for stealing $1,850 from behind a bar.

But Senior Magistrate Will Francis asked 31-year-old Derrick Duval Binns, of Hook and Ladder Lane, Somerset to seek treatment for his problem while paying off his hefty fine.

Asked if he had anything to say, Binns apologised and asked for any sentence to include regular drug treatment.

But Mr. Francis slapped him with a $2,300 fine, $1,850 of which will be paid back to Somerset Cricket Club.

WOMAN FINED $1,400 CTS Woman fined $1,400 Having a crack pipe on Court Street and not turning up for trial earned a Warwick woman a $1,400 fine in Magistrates' Court.

Tanya Crystal Smith, 33, of Dunscombe Road, was brought before Senior Magistrate Will Francis after she did not turn up for trial a week earlier.

Smith, a member of the Woodshop Plus project, had pleaded not guilty to possessing a crack pipe on June 28, 1998, but in court last Thursday, she admitted the offence.
