"Smackie'' was acquitted yesterday in Supreme Court three after being accused of stealing money from the Colonial Building in Hamilton on February 2, last year.

If you have not heard about this case do not be surprised because it is a fictional case developed by the Ministry of Youth and Sport for their teen camp entitled "In The Name Of The Law''.

Other fictional characters included P.c. E.X. Pert, P.c. Stone Deaf and Mr. B.

Puisne Judge the Hon. Mr. Justice Meerabux presided over the proceedings which saw students between the ages of 12 and 15 act out the mock trial.

The students received the chance to see what it was like to be a witness, juror and even the Crown counsel, complete with traditional wigs and gowns.

Director of Youth and Sports Mr. Brenton Roberts -- who observed the proceedings -- later said it was a perfect chance for young people to experience the court system.

He also said he wished to thank Mr. Meerabux for his participation and lawyers Miss. Nicole Stoneham, Mr. Marc Telemaque and Mr. Juan Wolffe for acting as coaches to the youngsters.

He said he was particularly grateful to Chief Justice the Hon. Austin Ward for his cooperation with project.
