The Prohibited Restaurants Bill was scheduled to be come up for a second reading in the Senate yesterday, but was carried over until another Senate meeting.

On Sunday Government Senate Leader Gary Pitman predicted little debate on the act: "I don't think it will be debated much -- if at all.'' And yesterday Opposition Senate Leader Milton Scott was hesitant to say when the act would be brought to senator's attention.

"All I can say is that it will be before Senate rises,'' he said.

United Bermuda Party MP Ann Cartwright DeCouto's bill was blocked by UBP Senators in June last year after it had passed the House of Assembly.

Senate, which can only block a bill for 12 months, cannot halt it a second time.

No matter how the vote goes, the act will go to the Governor for Royal Assent.

Meanwhile Senators yesterday passed the Bermuda Bar Amendment Act during the hour-and-a-half session.

The act will speed up the complaints system of the legal profession and extends voting privileges to registered associates of the Bermuda Bar Association.

Other features include: Increasing the quorum for meetings of the Association to 25 from 12; Allowing the president to temporarily appoint a barrister as a member of the council where necessary to make up a quorum; and Giving lawyers who are spouses of Bermudians the right to apply for a practising certificate.

And Senators also passed the Professional Surveyors Act 1997 which will attempt to ensure the high standards of surveyors.

To maintain these standards in the surveying profession, the act will create a register of qualified personal.

Government Senate leader Gary Pitman yesterday said Senators would tomorrow debate The Companies Amendment Act, The Bermuda Monetary Authority Amendment Act, The Bermuda Airport (Duty Free Sales) Act and The Building Amendment Act.
