during a massive Police operation against drug dealers.

Randolph Ball, of Rock Valley, Rocklands, Warwick, admitted two counts of supplying crack cocaine.

But the others denied the charges or elected Supreme Court trials when they appeared during the seven-hour bail hearing.

The court heard the operation, codenamed "Cleansweep'', involved American undercover narcotics officers and videotaping of alleged deals.

It was spearheaded by Scotland Yard's Det. Supt. Paul William Hoare, who was seconded to Bermuda's drugs squad in January.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis remanded 14 of the men in custody over charges of supplying such drugs as heroin, crack cocaine and cannabis.

The other man, Curtis Grant, 26, of Beacon Hill Road, Sandys Parish, was bailed and ordered to reappear at Magistrates' Court on June 10.

This followed a dispute over the weight of drugs involved in the allegation against him.

The alleged deals ranged in value from $25 to $100 and occurred mainly in Warwick and the Broome Street area of Sandys in April and May.

Security was tight around the court for the bail application hearing which lasted from 2.30 p.m. to 9.45 p.m.

Police Commissioner Colin Coxall joined other officers in a packed public gallery.

Mr. Francis took pleas from those who asked for their cases to be heard at Magistrates' Court. Others opted for Supreme Court trials, and were not required to plead.

The first before Mr. Francis were: Samuel Wilson, 42, of Middle Road, Southampton; denied eight charges of supplying drugs -- five involving cannabis, two crack cocaine and one coke.

Alleged offences occurred in Warwick; John Garfield Smith, 43, of Broome Street, Sandys, who faced six allegations.

Four involved diamorphine, or heroin, and the others cannabis and crack cocaine. Alleged offences occurred in Sandys; Eugene Levi Robinson, 29, of Bobs Valley Lane, Sandys Parish; denied two charges of supplying cannabis in Sandys. He pleaded not guilty to two other charges -- possessing cannabis with intent to supply and knowingly handling cannabis with intent to supply in Sandys -- which were not related to operation "Cleansweep''; Denton Parris, 26, of Cochrane Road, Sandys, and Mervyn Smith, 42, of Bob's Valley Lane, Sandys, jointly charged with supplying diamorphine in Broome Street; Drugs charges Micha Hollis, 21, of Homestead Lane, Southampton; five allegations, four involving crack cocaine and the other cannabis. Alleged offences occurred in the Warwick Bowl area.

Wilson, John Smith, Hollis, Parris and Mervyn Smith were remanded in custody until June 20.

Robinson was given two dates: July 14 for the handling and possession allegations, and July 21 for the other two.

The second group of defendants before Mr. Francis included: Kyle Baxter, 22, of Bob's Valley Lane, Sandys; two charges of supplying crack cocaine in Sandys; John Edness, 32, of No. 36 Tribe Road, Warwick; two allegations of supplying crack cocaine in Ord Road, Warwick; Lionel Jones, 18, of Greenfield Lane, Sandys; charged with supplying crack cocaine in Broome Street, Sandys; Elroy Kelly, 21, of Ord Valley Lane, Warwick; charged with three counts of supplying in Warwick, two involving cannabis and the other crack cocaine. His lawyer, Marc Telemaque, made no bail application; George Mouchette, 40, of Rushy Lane, Sandys; one charge of aiding and abetting in the supply of diamorphine in Broome Street; George Simons, 35, of Westering Lane, Warwick; six counts, five involving cannabis and the other crack cocaine. Alleged offences occurred in the Warwick Bowl area; Clyde Swan, 39, of no fixed abode; denied two charges of supplying cannabis in the Warwick Bowl area.

Ball admitted supplying crack cocaine in Warwick on May 12 and 14.

Ball's case was adjourned for sentence on Tuesday. The others were adjourned until June 20.

Parris, Smith, Wilson and Swan were unrepresented.

But the others were represented by a batch of lawyers, including Archie Warner, Mark Pettingill, Mr. Telemaque, Phillip Perinchief and Sen. Lawrence Scott. All apart from Mr. Telemaque made bail applications.

For the prosecution were Senior Crown Counsel Brian Calhoun and Crown Counsel Leighton Rochester, who called on Supt. Hoare to provide testimony.

Supt. Hoare said "Cleansweep'' had been running over three and a half months and was ongoing. It had involved undercover Drug Enforcement Administration officers from Newark, he added.
