Five vehicles collide in east broadway crash
Broadway littered with glass and sent a pedestrian and a driver to hospital.
Drivers and other witnesses gave varying descriptions of precisely how the accident happened at 11.50 a.m., or who was to blame.
But all agreed that the crash was a domino effect begun when a car pulled out of the Shell gas station.
Witnesses and Police spokeswoman Sgt. Andrea Brown said the subsequent collision involved the car, two other cars heading out of Hamilton on East Broadway, and a container truck behind them.
One of the eastbound cars then crashed into a parked Department of Health van and struck a 58-year-old Smith's Parish man who was standing on the sidewalk.
Two of the cars -- one of them badly damaged -- came to rest on the sidewalk near the Blue Water Anglers Club, while a third was facing west on the road nearby.
The container truck, with a damaged fender, was farther out of town, while one car and the van were inside the Shell station exit.
Sgt. Brown said the pedestrian suffered from a cut eyebrow and a possible leg injury. One of the car drivers complained of whiplash. Both men were treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
A Police investigation has not yet determined who was responsible or how exactly it started, she said.
Traffic was backed up for an hour as Police cleared the accident and a crew swept glass off the road.
