The UK Government has called for an immediate report into claims made by a inmate that she was raped by prison officers at the Co-ed facility.

The Foreign Office called Governor Thorold Masefield early yesterday and asked for a full briefing on the alleged incident, in which a 19-year-old British woman claimed she was sexually abused whilst in prison.

Deputy Governor Tim Gurney confirmed that the requested report is due to arrive in London early today.

The teenager alleged she was raped by officers after becoming intoxicated in January. And the results from a pregnancy test have yet to be revealed.

The woman also alleged that she was threatened about revealing what is claimed to have happened.

And last week, three prison officers were suspended from duty whilst investigations of impropriety are investigated.

Family of the inmate -- who is serving six years for smuggling heroin into Bermuda -- say they will fight to have her released from prison and brought back to the UK.

Speaking from London last night, her godmother said they had contacted the Foreign Office and the office of their local MP, Health Minister Frank Dobson, in their campaign.

They are expecting to hear from Foreign Office officials today, with regard to what their next step is.

"We have been assured that no stone will be left unturned,'' she said. "We are acting very fast.'' The girl's mother spoke to her daughter yesterday and said she was very confused and called for her to be released immediately, saying she had suffered enough already.

Labour and Home Affairs Minister Paula Cox is also monitoring the situation.

She said: "Anybody who saw yesterday's headline has to be concerned. Right now it's not for me to comment because there is an investigation under way, but it is certainly disturbing.'' And a Government spokesman said the prison officers at the centre of the allegations will remain off duty until the investigation is completed.

They will remain off until it is determined a course of action, if any, is to be taken.

London investigates rape charge "The Prison authorities will decide whatever steps are necessary,'' she added.

The probe has now been passed to the Police, following a formal complaint about the alleged incident.

A Police spokesman said the allegation was under active investigation by major incident room and there was nothing to add in relation to the inquiry at this stage.

The girl was 17 when she received a six year sentence for importing $66,000 of heroin into the Island, after a flight from London.
