Friends and family of an 18-year-old Bermuda student killed in Canada over the weekend continue to come to terms with the tragedy.

Former Saltus student Michelle Outerbridge was struck by a car when she tried to cross a busy four-lane thoroughfare near the University of Western Ontario campus.

Student remembered Witnesses say she made it halfway across the road and looked the other way before being struck by a car.

University officials said Ms Outerbridge just completed freshman orientation, better known as `frosh week'. Ms Outerbridge had just entered the first year of a four-year Administrative and Commercial Studies programme.

The accident occurred about 10.30 p.m. Saturday as she dashed into the southbound lane of Western Road.

An outstanding student and avid athlete, Ms Outerbridge had just graduated from Saltus Graduate Year 2000.

Nigel Kermode, Saltus headmaster told The Royal Gazette , "Michelle was an exceptionally caring person who did volunteer work for the Allan Vincent Smith Foundation and other local AIDS charities.'' Mr. Kermode said, "Michelle had many fine qualities and will be sorely missed. On behalf of the school, I would like to publicly extend the condolences of the entire Saltus community to the Outerbridge family in this time of grief.'' The flag at Saltus will be flown at half-mast for the week and a memorial is to be scheduled in the senior school.

She is survived by parents Lise Outerbridge of Southampton, Leslie Outerbridge of Smith's and grandparents in Montreal.

Her family requested donations to Saltus in lieu of flowers and a special account has been established in her name.
