The Premier last week encouraged Bermudian college students to embrace the myriad of opportunities available to them with the Island's largest employer -- the Government.

Jennifer Smith played host at her brainchild, the first Government Career Reception at her official residence Camden.

Ms Smith noted that it was time that Government host such an event after seeing many similar events held by many organisations in the private sector.

Over 100 students turned out at the garden reception to hear from top civil servants about their experiences and what is available to young people today.

Director of Personnel Services, Judith Hall-Bean led the speeches and represented the line-up of senior Government officers.

The welcome was given by Cabinet Secretary John Drinkwater who said he was "greatly encouraged'' that so many people had turned out for the event.

His comments were followed by the Premier who said: "The Bermuda Government has long awaited this opportunity to present to you, the future leaders of this Island, the endless career options open to you.

"Yes you've been courted by the private sector and yes, the career choices are there, but what about your uniqueness?.

She added: "The Bermuda Government is not only Bermuda's largest employer, it has over 1,000 different job types. This is because over the years we have grown and adapted to encompass the diversity of talent and skills that our young work force possesses. The opportunities are endless, let us show you where they begin.'' Senior Training Manager Crystal Clay explained the role of Personnel Services in getting young people involved in Government occupations.

And testimonials were heard from two former trainees and two current trainees.

One young woman, Carlita O'Brien, was brought to tears as she reflected upon her experience as a trainee with the Government as the administrative assistant to the Director of Personnel.

She said: "As I reflect back over the past eight years, I can truly say that it is only by the grace of God, the support of the current Director of Personnel Services, Mrs. Judith Hall-Bean and the commitment of the Bermuda Government, whose goal is to train individuals who have a desire and eagerness to grow, that have allowed me to make it this far.'' She added: "In 10 days my family will be travelling to the UK where I will be pursuing a Masters of Personnel Management Programme for 13 months.'' Head of the Civil Service, Stanley Oliver, invited the students to continue networking with those in their fields of interest.

Mr. Oliver told The Royal Gazette that the opportunities for young people in Government were "unbelievable''.

He added: "Government will be the employer of choice in the future. We need to make sure they realise that Government is one of the best options for them to pursue.

"They will have the opportunity to take part in the shaping of the country and to effect change.'' High-school graduate Tameisha Matthews said she hoped that her presence at the event would gain her an opportunity for a job over someone else without "connections''.

Many volunteers were on hand to assist students with information about the many areas within the Government. All students who registered were given gift bags including a handy sterling silver business card holder.
