that will bring the boom down on dodgy practices in Bermuda's marketplace.

Development, Opportunities and Government Services Minister Terry Lister yesterday said he was currently reviewing the draft of proposed consumer protection legislation.

He expects the legislation will be submitted to Parliament by June this year.

The legislation is expected to crack down on merchant practices carried on in Bermuda but outlawed in most jurisdictions. A report on the issue called for penalties against shopkeepers who sold out-of-date products, and who had year long "sales''.

The report also recommended giving more powers to the The Consumer Affairs Board, the watchdog for shoppers. Also among the 15 recommendations by the task force was a plea for mechanics to be properly certified and licensed.

Mr. Lister said some requirements would have to be phased in, giving time for mechanics to get certified for example.
