Belco head office workers are also encouraged to bring their own cups to work and re-use envelopes.

The suggestions are all part of a company "Green Scheme'', announced to coincide with Earth Day today.

An office environment committee devised the plan under the direction of Mr.

Wayne Carey, Belco's environmental officer.

The aims are to generate less paper, re-use paper that is generated, and recycle more cans and bottles through the Ministry of Works and Engineering.

"A company the size of Belco with approximately 400 employees can have a major impact on the environment,'' the committee said in the current edition of Belco's staff magazine.

"We want to make an ongoing commitment to reduce office waste as our contribution to protect Bermuda's environment for our generation and future generations.'' An audit of Belco's office waste was conducted before the programme was launched. It will be used to measure the success of the Green Scheme.

The programme could then be extended to branch offices and other areas of the company.

Other suggestions include using E-mail for memos and letters, using both sides of scrap paper and photocopy paper, providing recycling bins throughout the building, and redesigning fax cover sheets to save paper.

Today is the 25th anniversary of the first Earth Day.
