Bank of Bermuda executive Stewart Greenslade will run for the United Bermuda Party in the Devonshire North by-election.

And the 41-year-old Bermudian who is credited with singlehandedly rejuvenating the once dormant UBP Devonshire North branch, said he was unafraid of the challenge of running in an area known to be a safe PLP seat.

At a Press conference yesterday Premier David Saul said that Mr. Greenslade represented a new and fresh approach.

And Dr. Saul said he underscored this approach with "boundless enthusiasm'' and effervescence.

Mr. Greenslade, vice president of technical services at the Bank of Bermuda has already been canvassing for the past nine months.

"Mr. Greenslade is going to be a new face,'' Dr. Saul said. "There is a lot of good psychology in putting a new face and a keen young person there, if I can say at 41 he's young! "The feedback I have had from the people in Devonshire North going back to January and February of this year shows that they are thrilled to have someone from the United Bermuda Party who is being seen regularly down there asking questions about street lights, traffic problems and hedge cutting.

"These are the things the people in Devonshire North, have over three quarters of the year, come to see of this fresh, young, dare I say, white face in Devonshire North.

"And I believe that is refreshing and I do believe that people will give support to someone who's young and keen.'' Dr. Saul said that Mr. Greenslade was young, enthusiastic and energetic.

Mr. Greenslade who started pounding the pavements back in January said he was often asked why he was canvassing.

"One of the things that I intend to bring to this particular constituency is the fact that I will be there on a regular basis,'' he said.

"When I started back in January or February the first question I got asked was `Why are you here? There's no election why are you here?' he said. "My answer to that is very simple. If I was looking for a candidate that's who I would want. Somebody who came to listen.'' Mr. Greenslade said that the Devonshire North residents were concerned about drugs and crime and this was consistent with the rest of the Country.

He will contest the October 10, by-election against Paula Cox of the Progressive Labour Party and Edwin Carlton Armstrong of the National Liberal Party.

The polling station will be the Prospect Primary School with nomination day on Thursday September 26 and the Advanced Poll for absent and incapacitated voters taking place on Thursday October 3.

The by-election became necessary after the death of Devonshire North Member of Parliament and Leader of the Opposition Mr. L. Frederick Wade on August 13.
