Heard Chapel in the area's Glebe Road, has asked the Department of Planning for permission to change the use of the hall.

The Rev. Leonard Santucci said the hall was currently used for overflow from services and for meetings.

He said: "I am of the opinion there is a tremendous need for this kind of service in Pembroke, largely because the church is not too far from the city, which is the major business and commercial area on the Island.'' Rev. Santucci added that the daycare centre would also allow the church to follow its aim of broadening its types of outreach.

He said: "The long-term plan is to make the church a seven-day-a-week institution in terms of services it's capable of providing.

The official notice of intention to develop was published yesterday and anyone who wants to object has 14 days to lodge their views with the department of planning.

But Rev. Santucci said: "I think most people would applaud this -- we want to help redevelop the community and in order to do that work we have to go beyond the four walls of the church and beyond Sunday worship.''
