But The Royal Gazette understands the culprits may have been visiting US and Royal Navy sailors on a drunken rampage.

The sailors had arrived in Bermuda on the HMS Cumberland and US Navy ship Samuel B. Roberts , which have both departed.

The fountain in front of the Clocktower shopping centre suffered the most damage.

Other reports of vandalism, believed to have been caused by the drunken sailors -- apparently kicked out of a bar in the area, include an attempt to cut the mooring line of the Government tender Canima , the theft of numerous signs from outside shops and restaurants and damage to a scuba diving boat.

The owner of the dive boat also reported the theft of scuba gear, including a dive tank and wet suit which he believes were thrown overboard.

An investigation was launched yesterday when the reports were received, a Police spokesman said.
