A Jamaican man given a 12 month prison sentence for attacking his Bermudian wife with a machete last year has been ordered to leave the Island.

Carlton Byfield completed his prison term six weeks ago but was kept in custody until a decision about his future had been made.

Byfield wanted to stay in Bermuda on the grounds that he was married to a Bermudian national.

But the marriage was annulled last week and yesterday an Appeals Court ordered that the 27-year-old must leave the Island by January 5.

At his trial in October, 1996 Byfield claimed that he had been provoked into attacking his wife -- 31-year-old Sherrylynn Byfield -- after she physically abused him and flirted with other men.

Mrs. Byfield received massive injuries in the attack, which took place in February 1996. Her left thumb was almost amputated and she also suffered lacerations across her front and back and several head wounds.

Byfield was eventually found guilty by a majority verdict of unlawful wounding but was acquitted of two more serious charges of attempted murder and wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

POLICE SEARCHING FOR SANDYS' MAN CTS Police searching for Sandys man Police are seeking a 23-year-old Sandys Parish man after he allegedly assaulted a 13-year-old boy on Thursday evening.

The incident took place on Peat Lane in Pembroke around 5.30 p.m. as the teen played football in his garden with some friends.

The boy told Police that the man rode into his yard with a child on the back of his cycle.

During the visit, the child allegedly bit the teen who then pushed the child away.

The older man then began punching the teen in the face and head. When the boy fell to the ground, the man proceeded to kick him about the body.

The boy was able to run home and returned with a baseball bat which he said was eventually used against him.

The boy suffered bruising to his face and the inside of his mouth. He was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.

ELECTRICITY THEFT REPORTED TO POLICE CRM Electricity theft reported to Police Police attended a Pembroke residence on Thursday evening after receiving a report of "a theft of electricity''.

Spokesperson Evelyn James Barnett said when the officers arrived at the St.

Augustine's Road home, they were taken to the metre room of a building controlled by the Bermuda Housing Corporation.

There they saw an orange extension cord running from the metre to another apartment.

Although the door to the room had been padlocked, the lock had been forced open to gain entry.

Police visited the apartment, but the occupant was not at home. Inquiries were continuing.
