But experts at the Bermuda Weather Service point out that its basic direction is still north west.

And Hurricane Irene is no longer a potential threat as it passed its closest point of approach on Monday afternoon which put it at 393 nautical miles north north west of Bermuda. It looks set to continue its north easterly route as the week progresses.
