make-up of St. George's corporation if successful in next week's election.

He said the current situation of having five Common Councillors and three Aldermen was not in the best interests of the town as it did not take into account their experience.

At the moment, Aldermen are considered of higher rank than councillors and are often made the chairman of committees and responsible for making major decisions.

However, sometimes the Aldermen have little or no experience on the corporation, yet have greater responsibility than the councillors, who may have held seats for many years.

He said: "I would like to do away with the role of Alderman and see nine councillors elected instead.

"Together they could decide which of them should be mayor, and also decide together who were the best people to chair committees, depending on their knowledge and experience.

"I have travelled around the world in my role as Town Crier and have taken an interest in how other towns do it. I think this would in the best interests of the people.'' He also said he wanted to find funding to refurbish and improve the Town Hall, transferring meetings of the corporation from the main Town Hall room to the Mayor's Parlour.

He said the acoustics and lay-out of the room would better suit meetings, although the Mayor's Parlour would need enhancing.

He added: "I believe we need to do something with the Town Hall. The building is in a despicable state. I believe we would easily get funding, perhaps from the St. George's Foundation.''
