candidate for St. George's North -- considered a major battleground in the next election.

He is the former UBP branch chairman in St. George's South and a Corporation of St. George's common councillor.

His adoption was confirmed unanimously last night at a meeting at St. Peter's Church Hall, St. George's. No other names were put forward.

Mrs Joan Davis, secretary for St. George's North UBP, said 22 party members turned up.

She said Mr. Jones will now be an election running mate with Mr. Phillip Smith MP.

Mr. Jones, 40, an insurance executive with British American, replaces former UBP MP Mr. Doc Hall as a candidate for the key marginal constituency.

Mr. Hall was ousted by Progressive Labour Party MP Ms Jennifer Smith in the 1989 election, while Mr. Smith held his seat.
