acid at a life-long friend.

It took the six-man, six-woman jury about three hours to come back with the majority verdict.

Dwayne Troy Duane Symonds, 29, of Random Lane, Warwick -- who had denied charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to burn, maim and disfigure William Henry Santucci, 35, of Pembroke, with a corrosive substance -- could receive up to ten years in prison.

Puisne Judge the Hon. Justice Meerabux ordered a social inquiry report and released Symonds on extended bail because it was Symonds' first conviction.

Symonds will appear in court on July 4 for sentencing.

Santucci, of Cedar Avenue, received third-degree burns to 90 percent of his face and also burns to his arms and chest on April 22 when he visited Symonds' home.

He earlier told the court he went to Symonds' trailer home to collect some belongings he had left there several hours ago.

Standing outside the trailer, Santucci said he called to Symonds to return some tobacco left inside.

He said Symonds opened the trailer door, handed the tobacco to him, and for no reason threw acid in his face.

Under cross-examination by defence lawyer, Mr. Mark Pettingill, Santucci admitted he did have a number of convictions involving assault and trespassing dating up to March 1995.

Symonds, who claimed he acted in self-defence, said Santucci had punched him on two other occasions and once held a knife to his throat.

He said on the night of the incident Santucci came to his trailer "ranting and raving'' and asking for the $100 they both owed to a drug dealer.

"I was frightened,'' Symonds told the jury. "I threw the acid to protect myself. I didn't know what he was going to try.'' However, Crown Counsel Mr. Melvin Douglas accused Symonds of throwing the acid two or three times because he had grown annoyed with Santucci.

Symonds denied this.
