KBB inundated with calls after heritage day mess

Heritage Day littering following a flood of complaints last week, KBB president Mr. Barry Brewer said yesterday.

Since media coverage exposed the tons of garbage left at Bernard Park in Pembroke and along the entire route of the annual Bermuda Day parade, the Keep Bermuda Beautiful hotline and executive committee members has been inundated with advice from concerned residents, said Mr. Brewer.

"What we left behind after the parade was a disgrace,'' he said. "It was embarrassing to be Bermudian. However, all agreed that there were not enough litter bins for 17,000 people.

"It was noted that while most bins were full, an equal amount of trash was left on the ground.'' Mr. Brewer said while some people thought it unrealistic to expect no trash at a parade and many thought it unrealistic to expect people to move from where they could view the parade to find a trash bin, there were some excellent suggestions made.

"Bins mounted on vehicles should continuously travel the parade route allowing spectators to remove accumulated trash and recyclables from beneath them, keeping their area clean,'' he said. "Those vehicles might be horse-drawn carts with recycling bins in them to encourage the recycling of aluminium glass, tin, etc.'' He said it was also recommended that: All persons be encouraged to bring their own bags; Trash bags be handed out or mounted on telephone poles; More trash receptacles be available and be emptied frequently; Reminders be placed in the media in the days leading up to the event.

"What's really nice about the public input is that over the years, various club operators have asked if there was anything we could do to help,'' Mr.

Brewer said. "They spend thousands of dollars cleaning up after events which could be put into sports or youth programmes.

"The best thing about the suggestions is that they can be incorporated anywhere for any major event.'' HELPING OUT -- General manager of Bermuda Properties Mr. Peter Parker yesterday presented the St. George's Fire Brigade with a cheque for $2,500.

The money is to be used to upgrade fire fighting gear. Pictured, from left to right, are St. George's fire chief Mr. Gary Renaud, Mr. Parker and Mayor of St. George's the Wor. Henry Hayward.
