Mr. Richard Hector suggested his client, Reiner Thieding, of German origin, may have been picked on because of his poor English.

"I see no justification for keeping him in custody overnight. I hope it is not because he did not speak Bermudian as we know it,'' he told Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis.

Thieding, of Winton Hill Lane, Hamilton Parish, who is married to a Bermudian, denied charges of fraud and offensive behaviour when he appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Sgt. Rex Osborne, prosecuting, said Thieding was placed in custody because of his alleged behaviour.

The case was adjourned until April 23, 1993.
