Mr. Francis agreed to set bail for 38-year-old Charles Williams after hearing arguments related to an incident last Wednesday that resulted in a woman receiving 30 stitches to close knife wounds.

Williams' bail conditions also included orders for him to stay at his father's apartment in Pembroke and not to contact the woman.

He is to return to Magistrates' court for mention on August 17.

A Fire Service spokesman said that at about 7 a.m. on Sunday a pole on the corner of Duke of York and Clarence Streets in St. George's burst into flames.

Three appliances from the St. George's Fire Station, two from Hamilton and 18 men were needed to put it out. A faulty transformer switch is believed to have caused the blaze.

On Saturday at about 8 p.m., nine firefighters and one appliance put out a small brush fire on Devon Springs Road in Devonshire.

And at about 10.30 a.m. last Thursday, nine firefighters and two fire engines pumped out a flooded utility room at a house on Bellevue Drive in Paget.

About one inch of water had accumulated from a burst pipe in the air conditioning cooling system.

WOMAN LOSES $60 IN BAG SNATCH CRM Woman loses $60 in bag snatch Police are investigating a handbag snatching in which a Smith's Parish woman was robbed of $60.

The woman was walking near Union and Angle streets around 9.30 p.m. last Friday when her bag was snatched.

The woman reported that the culprit walked up behind her and ran off with her black leather bag containing $60, a bank card and other personal items.

A man was seen crouching in trees and looking into a cottage in Southampton around 5.30 p.m. on July 31, Police spokeswoman Sgt. Andrea Browne said.

Police pursued the man who got away.

Staff at a Paget guest accommodation reported seeing a man walking around the property on three different occasions on August 1 and 2. But he left the property before Police arrived.

Another prowler, at a Hermitage Road, Devonshire home on August 1, also escaped before Police arrived.

COSTLY ERRAND FOR UNDER AGE DRIVER CTS Costly errand for under age driver A 17-year-old girl was fined $170 in Magistrates' Court yesterday for speeding and driving while under age.

Eugenia DeShields pleaded guilty to speeding at 54 kmh and riding a motorcycle she was not qualified to drive.

Police Insp. Peter Duffy, prosecuting, told the court that DeShields ran into a Police radar trap on Marsh Folly Road at 3 a.m. on the night of Saturday, July 25.

She admitted she was 17, and said her older sister had asked her to go out and get some gasoline for the bike.

Lawyer Ms Keren Lomas said DeShields had "succumbed to the dictates of someone older'' and that she was now full of remorse.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined DeShields $70 for speeding and $100 for driving a vehicle she was not qualified to drive. She was also disqualified from all driving for one year.
