yesterday for a man who pleaded guilty to pointing a toy gun at a Policewoman.

Desai Mardel Jones, of Pembroke Park Lane, also admitted to two counts of destroying windows, one count of threatening a woman in a video store and one count of wilfully damaging a plumbing fixture in Hamilton Police Station.

Under Bermuda's tough new firearms laws, the 21-year-old could have faced a minimum five-year jail sentence for possession of the gun in Supreme Court.

But his lawyer, Mr. Mark Pettingill, said: "The Crown made what I feel is an appropriate decision to have the matter dealt with summarily,'' Mr. Pettingill said after his client's appearance.

He cited the results of a psychiatric report on Jones and the fact that the gun he aimed at a Policewoman on December 20 was a toy as determining factors in the prosecution's decision.

The charges against Jones stem from a vandalism spree the Kentucky Fried Chicken employee went on between December 18 and 30.

On December 18, court heard, Jones caused more than $800 in damage after he broke two window panes at a variety store on Court Street. He was reported to have committed the crime because he "liked the sound of breaking glass''.

Two days later, Jones pointed the toy gun at a Policewoman who was pursuing him through Hamilton for breaking two window panes at Jupiter Tyndall (Bermuda) Ltd.

He escaped on that occasion, but was picked up on December 30 for threatening a woman who had refused to give him money at United Video Centre on Court Street.

The damage to the Police Station's water system occurred while Jones was in Police custody.

The gun was found between two mattresses in his home during a subsequent investigation.

Yesterday, Mr. White adjourned the case until April 21 so the social inquiry report could be prepared.

Jones was released on bail.
