Daniel Anthony Jerome Cann was also charged with causing grievous bodily harm by burning to little Cannice Joann White, and the unlawful mistreatment of a child in his charge "so as to cause that child unnecessary harm and ill health''.

The South Shore Road resident, who was not required to enter a plea, was composed throughout his court appearance, speaking only to lawyer Mr. Perry Trott.

Mr. Trott, appearing on behalf of Cann's lawyer Mr. Delroy Duncan, requested and was granted a mention in Magistrates' Court until next Friday. Cann will be held in custody until then, when Mr. Duncan is expected to apply for bail.

Family members filed out after Cann as he was led from the courtroom in handcuffs.

Moments later, a woman identified as Cann's wife launched an emotional outburst in the outer hallway of the court building, throwing her handbag at a member of the Attorney General's Chambers and screaming "No! No! No!''.

As the sobbing woman was restrained and comforted by bystanders, Cann managed to break away from Police and lunged for a television cameraman waiting outside.

Cann allegedly threatened the cameraman prior to his court appearance, promising to break his camera equipment if he was filmed.

Cann, who was not handcuffed to any of the three officers guarding him, was quickly subdued.
