Paul Ronald Williams, who did not have to enter a plea, told Magistrate Edward King "that's probably the best thing'' when Junior Crown counsel Cindy Clarke said she would object to bail.
The indictable charge of aggravated robbery will go before the Supreme Court.
Williams is charged with robbing the store's manager with a machete on March 7.
Williams, of East Shore Lane was also charged with having an offensive weapon, the machete.
He was remanded into custody for two weeks until March 27. Police are continuing their appeal for witnesses, who are asked to contact Det. Insp.
