he did not want to face the wrath of his mother.

And on Friday, Frederick Richardson was fined $500 and taken off the road for a year after pleading guilty to driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Junior Crown counsel Veronica Gordon told the court how Richardson, who lives with his mother on Slippery Hill, St. George's, was spotted by Police slumped over the steering wheel of his car parked in a bus layby in the early hours of January 22.

"The officers spoke to the driver who said that he had been drinking but was going to stay there and sleep it off,'' Ms Gordon said.

Instead the two Police officers insisted on giving Richardson, who works as a barman at the Mid Ocean Club, a lift back home, saying that he could not sleep in a layby.

But shortly after Richardson's car was again spotted by Police, this time near St. George's Golf Course.

When officers stopped the vehicle and arrested Richardson, he explained that he was trying to get to his grandfather's house.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station but failed to provide a breath test.

Sentencing Richardson, Senior Magistrate Will Francis said: "I have to regard this case rather seriously.

"The Police find you asleep in your car and you are taken home and then a few minutes later you are seen driving around in this dangerous manner.'' In mitigation Richardson replied: "I really wasn't driving in a dangerous manner but, rather than go into my mother's house and listen to her mouth, I would go down to my friend's.''
