Jason Fox, 21, of St. Luke's Lane, yesterday pleaded "guilty with an explanation'' in Magistrates' Court to the charge of using offensive language.

Prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said Police attempted to stop Fox on St. David's Road around 3 a.m. on June 21.

Fox first ignored the Police signal, but was eventually stopped.

Sgt. Taylor said Fox approached the Police car and said to the officer, "What the f*** you stopping me for'', before getting back on his cycle and riding off.

Fox continued down the road, and was stopped again.

Sgt. Taylor said the officers warned Fox about his language. He responded: "I ain't done f***ing nothing. I'm not drunk, I'll take your f***ing test.'' Fox struggled with the officers and was then arrested.

Fox told Magistrate Cheryl-Ann Mapp that he was originally stopped for drunk driving, but he was not drunk.

Mrs. Mapp, however, asked: "How is that an explanation for your vocabulary?'' "Well, if you were arrested for something you didn't do, wouldn't you be mad, Your Honour?'' Fox replied "Your place is not to ask me questions, and mine isn't to provide you with answers,'' Mrs. Mapp said before fining him $200.

VISITOR FINED $400 CTS Visitor fined $400 A 49-year-old American visitor yesterday claimed he was unaware he brought drugs into the Island.

Prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said Edward Joseph Dunne, of Rhode Island, arrived in Bermuda on July 25 around 1.20 p.m.

When Customs officials searched his golf bag, they found three homemade cigarettes containing 1.34 grams of the drug.

Magistrate Cheryl-Ann Mapp asked Dunne why he brought drugs into the Island.

Dunne, who pleaded guilty to the charge, told Mrs. Mapp: "It's not my golf bag, it's my son's bag.

"I've been to Bermuda before, and I know what your laws are. I know how bags are searched at Customs, and it would be utter stupidity to bring drugs into the Country.'' Mrs. Mapp ordered Dunne to pay a $400 fine and suggested that he check his luggage more carefully in the future.

CYCLE THEIF FOILED CRM Cycle thief foiled An off-duty Policeman caught a would-be cycle thief in the act yesterday morning.

The incident occurred outside the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club when the officer observed a young male attempting to remove the ignition from a parked auxiliary cycle at about 1.30 a.m..

The officer approached the suspect and detained him until the arrival of his on-duty colleagues.

The suspect was then taken to Hamilton Police station where he was searched and subsequently interviewed. He is expected to appear in Magistrates' Court at a later date.

RESIDENCE BURGLED CRM Residence burgled A Ridgeway Road, Pembroke residence was the target of thieves over the weekend.

The occupant reported to Police that a pair of grey Bermuda shorts containing a wallet had been stolen from the living room.

Items in the wallet included a quantity of cash, a set of keys and other personal items.
