was remanded in custody for two weeks yesterday after his lawyer tried unsuccessfully to get him released on bail.

Anthony William Brangman, 29, is accused of importing two different types of narcotic -- cocaine hydrochloride and cannabis -- earlier this year and possessing them with the intent to supply.

A total of 1,343 grams of the cocaine and 438 grams of cannabis were eventually seized by Customs, court was told.

Brangman, an employee of the Agriculture and Fisheries Department, was not required to enter a plea yesterday but chose to have his case heard in the Supreme Court.

He is represented by Mr. Mark Pettingill.

During Brangman's arraignment, Solicitor General Mr. Barrie Meade opposed bail on the grounds that the quantity of the drugs involved was a large one and that the Police investigation was continuing.

Despite Mr. Pettingill's protests that Brangman had no previous record and therefore posed no threat to the "physical health of the people'' of Bermuda, Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis ordered a bail hearing for later in the afternoon where he found that there might be some "interference'' with the investigation if Brangman was granted bail and ordered him kept behind bars.

"This is a very serious case, a major importation,'' the judge said in his ruling. "I will therefore grant the Solicitor General's request.''
