injuring one man, blowing out windows and rattling nearby homes and businesses.

A resident at the house, Ralph Dill, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and treated for cuts and bumps and released.

A Bermuda Fire Services spokesman said a call was received at 8.07 a.m. for firefighters to attend an explosion at a house on St. John's Road near Arnold's Supermarket.

Police officers and an ambulance responded to the call.

Man injured in explosion They were joined by two fire trucks with six personnel at the property.

There were cracks in the home's wall and roof, a kitchen cabinet was destroyed and five windows were blown out but there were no flames to extinguish.

The spokesman said the explosion was caused when a can of aerosol pesticide spray was ignited by a pilot light in the house's stove.

He warned the public to "read the warning labels of aerosol pesticides as many of them are flammable and easily ignited''.

"They can be ignited by the fridge kicking in as well as other appliances which can create a spark when activated,'' he continued.

An employee at nearby BETA Bermuda said "we had not been here too long this morning, when all of a sudden there was a big bang, like a car crash''.

"We went outside and had a look but there were only two bikes in the area and no sign of any crash, then the fire department arrived.'' he said.

A co-worker added: "After the arrival of the emergency services, a man was sitting outside on the curb being attended to and seemed to be very shaken, but not badly hurt.'' Mr. Dill declined to comment on the incident.
