A vicious sex attacker who raped an 80-year-old woman after taking a cocktail of drugs was jailed for 14 years yesterday.

Restaurant worker Calvin Leroy Simmons was high on crack cocaine, marijuana and alcohol when he hauled the pensioner off her bed, shoved a sock in her mouth and raped her on the floor.

Forty-year-old Simmons, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to serious sexual assault on June 23.

And the court heard his victim, who suffers from heart failure and diabetes, lay frozen in fear for hours before she was able to raise the alarm.

She suffered severe bruising to her mouth, neck and private parts and she fainted immediately after her ordeal.

Simmons, wearing an orange regulation prison uniform, smirked as the Supreme Court judge jailed him for 14 years.

Chief Justice Austin Ward said: "This was a ghastly crime committed against an old lady who lived alone.

"The victim suffered injuries of a physical nature with psychological effects. Senior citizens must be able to feel safe in their own homes and we have a duty to protect them.'' Mr. Justice Ward allowed a charge of breaking and entering to lie on the file.

But he recommended Simmons, a part-time worker at the Figaro restaurant in Hamilton, should be treated for a series of drug addictions.

Prosecutor Brian Calhoun said Simmons broke into the house and crept into the bedroom.

He added: "Simmons was high on crack cocaine, alcohol and marijuana on the day of the offence.

"He certainly has a substance abuse problem although there is no evidence of any mental illness.'' Mr. Calhoun said the victim was awakened in her Paget home when she realised a pillow was being thrust over her face.

"She struggled but as she was about to scream, a dirty sock was pushed into her mouth. She was struck repeatedly in the face. Then she was pulled from the bed.'' He added: "She was forcibly sexually assaulted, an act which lasted approximately five or ten minutes.

"After the culprit ejaculated, she lost consciousness and remained on the floor of the bedroom.

"When she woke up she was unable to get to the telephone for quite a number of hours. She was in quite a tearful condition until the morning.

"But she finally gathered strength and phoned her daughter for assistance.

The daughter attended the residence at 7.50 a.m. the next morning and found her mother in the bedroom with her face and clothing in a bloody condition.'' The Crown counsel showed photographs of the victim's injuries to the judge and added that Simmons admitted the assault during Police questioning.

He also said he went to Court Street in Hamilton after the attack to take drugs with friends.
