admitted committing a string of offences last summer ranging from from assault to pizza snatching.

Prosecutor Sgt. Peter Giles said Jason Liburd, 22, of St. Monica's Road, had a history of dishonesty, beginning when he was a juvenile.

He noted efforts made by the courts to "put him back on the right track'' -- such as probation orders and suspended sentences -- had failed. Liburd had been jailed before, but for no longer than six months.

Liburd admitted yesterday to refusing to pay a taxi driver and using threatening behaviour, assaulting two Police officers and resisting arrest (when they arrived to question him about not paying the taxi fare), stealing stereo equipment from a church and stealing a pizza from a Four Star delivery girl.

He also admitted stealing $50 from out of a supermarket cashier's hand, stealing a tracksuit from a Court Street shop and snatching a woman's purse on Angle Street.

The Court heard he had refused to pay the taxi fare and threatened to beat up the driver. In the case of the pizza theft, he grabbed it from the delivery girl and ran. The handbag was snatched from a woman at night as she searched for her car keys.

Acting Magistrate the Wor. Michael Smith told Liburd he viewed bag snatching and fare dodging "very seriously'', adding he thought the maximum sentences for such offences should be higher.

Liburd told the Court he was very sorry for the crimes and wanted to pay back the people he stole from. He said he was drunk when he committed them.

Mr. Smith handed down a series of concurrent jail terms, amounting to a maximum of one year in prison.
