Man pleads guilty to sex assaults
April 1, 1994, and December 31, 1994.
Haromel Michael Beckles, 21, of Pembroke, was 15 when he committed the offence.
He initially pleaded not guilty to touching a minor for a sexual purpose when he was in a position of trust but changed his plea late last week. No evidence was offered by Crown Counsel Juan Wolfe on a second charge.
Both Mr. Wolfe and Beckles' lawyer Delroy Duncan argued that it was not in the interests of justice to have the summary of facts read out before the court.
But Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said he could not order a ban on reporting the facts in the summary.
The court then heard that the complainant in the matter was the mother of the victim, who was seven years old at the time of the offence.
She said the two boys met early in 1994 and, despite their age difference, became friends.
During the summer, Beckles would babysit the victim at his home, sometimes with adults present and other times alone.
The victim's mother said she believed Beckles was trustworthy, mature and was happy for him to look after her son.
But in December of last year, the victim, who is now 13, told her that he was sexually assaulted by Beckles.
The victim said he and the accused would play wrestling games, during which certain sexual activities would take place, and they would lie together naked on a bed.
Beckles was arrested and admitted committing the offences.
The court heard Beckles had no previous convictions and Mr. Duncan requested a social inquiry report be prepared by Social Services to aid in sentencing.
Mr. Warner said: "I know that, very often, the recommendation and assessment can be aided by psychological reports, and I think it would be prudent to save time as the services may come back and say that a psychological report needs to be carried out.'' The matter was adjourned until December and bail was extended.
