Police were called to Coots Hill in Somerset just before 9.p.m. following a report of a fight between two men.

The victim of the assault was taken by ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with a wound to his left shoulder.

He has been detained in the intensive care unit where his condition last night was said to be stable.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

WOMAN REPORTED MISSING POL Woman reported missing Police last night appealed for help in tracing a woman who disappeared on her birthday. Edwina Pierona was last seen on Friday night after she had been out celebrating. A Police spokeswoman said a male friend put her in a taxi in the area of Victoria Park in Hamilton around 9.30 p.m. -- but she never arrived home.

Police were alerted by the woman babysitting Ms Pierona's two-year-old son after she failed to return.

A Police spokeswoman said officers would like to speak to the man who helped Ms Pierona get a taxi and the taxi driver as well.
