Man stole so he could gamble
employer to support his gambling addiction.
David Howard Madeiros, 40, of Court Street, was employed as a waiter by Mr.
Richard Atley of ACNH Ltd., which owns After Hours Restaurant in Paget.
His duties included taking money from customers and occasionally opening and closing the restaurant.
On March 1, Madeiros was left to close the restaurant. When Mr. Atley returned at 9.30 a.m. the next day to balance the receipts and cash he found the money short by $750.
He told Police and Madeiros was arrested at 2.35 p.m. the same day.
Madeiros admitted stealing the money in order to support his gambling addiction.
When asked by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner if he had anything to say for himself, Madeiros replied: "I have a gambling addiction and I am getting help for my problem. The money has also been paid back.'' He added that he had started a new job and apologised to everyone involved.
Mr. Warner then fined him $500 and gave him time to pay.
Mr. Madeiros thanked him and said: "It won't happen again.''
