Magistrate Edward King told Earl Waldron, of Middle Road, Southampton, that if he did not pay the fine by the end of the day, he would go to jail for 19 months.

The court heard that the 37-year-old man was stopped a total of five times between March 8 and April 18 this year.

Each time he was charged with not having a vehicle licence and he was charged four times for not having insurance.

Waldron, who is employed by Government's Works and Engineering Department at the quarry depot, was fined $7,500 for the four counts of having no insurance and $3,750 for repeatedly failing to have a vehicle licence.

Waldron told the court that he had a licence to service and repair vehicles, causing the Magistrate to laugh out loud.

Mr. King said: "That doesn't matter. You have a blatant disregard for the law.

"This is the worst I have ever had facing me in respect to no insurance and no vehicle licence. You are a tremendous danger to people on the road. You are a menace to drivers, pedestrians, dogs, everybody.

"There is no other answer for you than prison.'' He ordered Waldron to pay the fines but imposed nine separate prison terms should he have failed to pay up immediately following the case yesterday.

Some of the sentences were to run concurrently, some were to run consecutively and they totalled 19 months behind bars.
