An emotional Cindy Middleton has left Bermuda with some harsh comments and unanswered questions.

The mother of murdered teenager Rebecca is to fly home to Canada today and vowed never to return to the Island that claimed the life of her 17-year-old daughter.

With husband Wayne Bennett by her side, Mrs. Middleton called for an immediate inquiry into the proceedings which followed the murder of Rebecca in July, 1996.

And she said as far as Canada was concerned, public pressure would ensure the matter was not allowed to fade away.

"I want an inquiry, the people of Canada want an inquiry and the people of Bermuda need an inquiry,'' she said.

"If there is one thing that Rebecca's death will hopefully benefit...about what went wrong and let's do something about it -- no more brushing it under the carpet.'' Speaking of the two and half years of heartbreak following the brutal murder of Rebecca, she said: "Becky's smile was like the sun. It didn't discriminate, it shone for everyone.

"That smile and sunshine went out of our lives. The ache in my heart never goes away. I had peace of mind with Becky going to Bermuda -- which has long been known as a safe place with high standards.

"Coming here on July 4, 1996, we were in shock. All we could think of was to bring Becky home. When we left we were assured things would be looked after in `the right way'.

"In Canada we put trust and faith in our Police. Here our trust was betrayed.

Things did not go as we expected. No-one deserves to be treated the way Becky was.

"No community deserves to be treated in the manner this legal system has handled this occurrence. An unjust system makes victims of everyone.'' Mrs. Middleton said the trip had been difficult and she had a jaded outlook.

She said Becky had told her of the Island's beauty and the friendliness of the people, and was right: "The people of Bermuda have been very good to us, they were sympathetic and compassionate -- they were thinking what if it were one of their children, it could have been a girl from Bermuda.

"Now it is time for Bermuda to deal with this. Not a single day goes by that we don't think of Becky. Please don't let Becky's death be in vain.'' COURTS CTS
