The officer and the victim, a 29-year-old woman, both received minor cuts but escaped any serious injury.

The woman, from Warwick, had been walking along Burnaby Street, near the Spot Restaurant, in the early hours of Saturday morning, when the robber took her handbag at knifepoint.

Spotting the incident, the officer challenged the man and a struggle took place before he broke free and ran away. The Policeman received minor cuts to his hands.

The robber was later caught in the car park of the MarketPlace. The handbag was recovered intact.

Police said that a 26-year-old man will appear in court in due course.

The Pembroke woman was returning home at 1.30 a.m. yesterday. She was in the grounds of her Fourth Avenue home when she was grabbed around the neck and pulled to the ground.

During the struggle she was struck twice in the face by the hooded attacker.

Her screams alerted neighbours and the man ran away with her handbag which contained $10 and other personal items.

The 10-foot hole contained horticultural waste which was being burned as refuse, near Cedar Hill.

Lt. John Thompson, at Hamilton Fire Station, said: "It was controlled burning that became a bit too much.'' Three fire appliances and 11 personnel attended the incident.

The fire brigade also put out brush fires in Random Lane, Warwick, and at Harrington Hundreds Road, Smith's.

Both fires were believed to be caused by controlled burning getting out of hand.

Fire fighters rushed to Harrington Sound School after reports that the building was on fire.

Luckily the fire was contained to a metal trash dumpster next to the school and the 11 fire service personnel quickly extinguished it.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Elliott School and Paget Primary School will benefit from operation "dental sealant.'' A dental sealant is a bit of plastic attached to the chewing surface of back teeth. It protects decay-prone areas from plaque and acid.

Students in primary classes 1, 2 and 7 will take part in the programme.

Parental consent will be needed.

Although sealants have been available since 1983 to children treated at Hamilton, Somerset and St. George's clinics, the new portable units enable dentists now to treat children at schools for the first time.

Said Senior Dental Officer Dr. Mark Coulby: "Children receive the greatest benefit from having sealants applied to new permanent teeth.
