The Pembroke resident was in court for two traffic related fines -- one for $400 dating back to January this year, and the other for $100 dating from 1995.

Spence told Magistrate Edward King that he "probably'' paid the 1995 fine.

"If you get credit from a shop, you will know if you paid,'' responded Mr.

King.

Spence then asked the Magistrate to give him time to pay the fines because he was unemployed.

"Of course I'm going to give you time,'' said Mr. King. "Pay $100 forthwith.

Pronto. Immediately. Without delay'' or go to prison for 14 days, for each $100 he owed the court, he said.
