The five-year-old dog's leg has been pinned and plated following two fractures.

It is also bearing severe puncture wounds after being shaken in the pit bull's jaws "like a piece of rag''.

Yesterday angry owner Mr. Allan Clark called for Bandit's attacker to be destroyed.

"It's obviously a danger to life and limb, and should be put down,'' he told The Royal Gazette .

"I keep thinking -- what if it had been my six-year-old god-daughter who had been attacked?'' He added: "I'm really mad about what happened. I've always felt these dogs, like pit bulls and rottweilers, are not just playful.

"They are vicious, and really brutal, and are bred to be that way. They are pretty unpredictable.'' The incident occurred on the railway tracks near Red Kiln Road, Hamilton Parish, at around 6.45 p.m. on Monday.

Mr. Clark, 54, was taking Bandit for a walk on a leash, when he was confronted by the pit bull, a German shepherd, and a mongrel.

All three dogs were unleashed, and appeared to belong to a young man jogging nearby.

The pit bull eyed Bandit, and then grabbed his right, hind leg.

"It began to shake it like of piece of rag,'' said Mr. Clark, a credit manager at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

"The German shepherd then decided it was going to join in, and bit the back of the pit bull.'' Mr. Clark said it was the German shepherd that saved Bandit from an even greater beating.

"I was able to release Bandit from the pit bull,'' he added.

Bandit appeared remarkably unscathed from the savaging, until Mr. Clark noticed shortly afterwards his leg was hanging loose.

"I took it to the vet, Dr. James, and the leg was found to broken in two places.

"There are also several deep puncture wounds in the leg.'' Mr. Clark, who is of Scottish descent and lives in Red Kiln Road, reported the incident to Police.

"I seem to be really unlucky. It's the third time I've experienced an attack like this on a dog of mine.'' Police spokesman Sgt. John Dale said yesterday inquiries were continuing into the attack.
